SENATE BILL 1383
Senate Bill 1383 builds upon the State of California’s leading commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
To reduce methane gas emissions, the California State Law SB1383 established targets to reduce organic waste disposal to landfills 50% by the year 2020 and by 75% by the year 2025. Cities and counties are required to implement a variety of programs to advance these goals.
January 1, 2022 was the implementation date the state law and regulations took effect, and the California Department of Resource Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) has the job of reinforcement upon the cities and the job of penalizing for noncompliance. By January first 2024 local government enforcement begins.
COMPOST is an “eligible recovered organic waste product” for procurement by jurisdictions – if it is produced from a specifically permitted or otherwise authorized facility or operation.
